Organ Pipes Project

St Peter’s organ was installed by Bryceson Bros in 1884 as a way of enlarging the earlier 1850’s Bates & Son instrument. It is highly regarded by those in the know, one of possibly only three surviving instruments in the country.

During the restoration and relighting project the 29 pipes on the front rank were removed for cleaning. An ornate Victorian design was revealed, which had been covered up by at least two layers of mustard coloured paint. This year, a detailed investigation was carried out by Arte Conservation Ltd to ascertain the original colours and design.

The project will focus on restoring the pipes to their former decorative glory. The organ case will also be cleaned. The cost of the project will be £23,000 (ex VAT). The PCC has a starter fund of £11,500. We are busy making applications to grant giving organisations, but we really need your help to make this project happen.
