SUMMARY:Petros Singers Recital
DESCRIPTION:Petros Singers’ Spem in Alium singing workshop culminates in this hour-long recital. Over the course of the day\, experienced amateur singers will have worked in eight individual choirs\, each led by a professional singer\, to explore and learn Thomas Tallis’ seminal work. In addition to the Workshop Choir\, you will hear performances by the professional workshop leaders (singing together as The Garter Consort) and by Petros Singers. \nThe recital will place Tallis’ 40-part motet within the context of his other choral works\, as well as works by his pupil\, William Byrd\, who died 400 years ago in 1623. There are few composers who mastered their craft as definitively as did Tallis\, particularly notable when you consider the historic religious upheaval that dominated\, and determined\, his artistic life. While Spem in Alium represents the apotheosis of his approach\, his smaller motets are no less miraculous. Moreover\, by first teaching and then going into business with Byrd\, Tallis was able to shape the second generation of Anglican choral music\, as he had defined the first\, as well as leaving his stamp on the early English Madrigal. \nThis influence will be explored in our recital as we place the music of these two great English composers alongside each other. SUMMARY:Petros Singers: Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Petros Singers for an afternoon exploring Bach’s B Minor Mass\, the composer’s great final achievement and\, arguably\, the pinnacle of grand choral composition. This monumental work was likely never performed during Bach’s lifetime\, with the first complete public performance taking place more than 100 years after his death. We are holding this workshop in anticipation of our own performance of the B Minor Mass at St James’s Piccadilly on 1 April 2023. \nThis come-and-sing workshop will be led by David Bates\, one of Europe’s most exciting directors of Baroque music. David will work through movements of the Mass\, bringing his unique flair for vocal communication\, text and musical style. After a break for tea\, we will have the opportunity to sing through the pieces we have rehearsed and\, at 5.30pm\, there will be an informal performance which friends and family of workshop participants are warmly invited to attend. \nTickets £25 | £20 concessions and under 28s\nAvailable from the PETROS SINGERS website. \n  \nDavid Bates is artistic director of La Nuova Musica with whom he performs regularly at the Wigmore Hall\, the London Handel Festival and on a string of critically acclaimed recordings. DESCRIPTION:Singing Workshop: A Royal Occasion \nLed by James Vivian\, Director of Music at St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle \nJoin Petros Singers for an afternoon celebrating 400 years’ worth of music written for and performed at the great royal occasions. The workshop will be led by James Vivian who\, as one of the few people to have conducted at a major royal ceremonial event in recent years\, and certainly the only person to have conducted at two\, is uniquely qualified. James will lead singers through a selection of music associated with royal weddings\, funerals and coronations including Parry’s I Was Glad and Handel’s Zadok the Priest\, amongst other favourites. \nJames Vivian is Director of Music at St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle where he conducts the famous choir in its\ndaily liturgical schedule\, in addition to performances on television\, radio and in concert. Prior to this he was Director\nof Music at The Temple Church\, London\, having held the AH Mann Organ Scholarship at King’s College\, Cambridge.\nAs both conductor and organist he has released recordings on many labels including Decca\, Sony BMG and Hyperion.\nHe has also appeared at festivals such as The Lincoln Festival in NYC and the BBC Proms. He continues to be much in demand as a recitalist throughout Europe and the United States. \nRichard Bannan\, our musical director\, is a baritone\, conductor and arranger. SUMMARY:Petros Singers' Concert: Hodie!
DESCRIPTION:Join Petros Singers for a Christmas concert without a shepherd\, Magi\, figgy pudding or partridge to be seen or heard! \nWe celebrate music written for Christmas Day itself\, such as the triumphant opening chorus of J. S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio and the splendid polychoral motet Puer Natus in Bethlehem by Michael Praetorius. These showpiece works are placed alongside more intimate fare such as Bruckner’s Virga Jesse and Parry’s Wolcum Yule while we also include Michael Haydn’s rarely heard Viderunt Omnes. \nLaunching a new initiative to feature music by female composers\, we perform recent pieces by Cheryl Frances-Hoad and Cecilia McDowall before Holst’s choral fantasy Christmas Day brings our concert to a joyous finale. \nThere will be the usual mixture of seasonal carols for the audience to join in with and more mince pies than you can shake a Santa hat at. It promises to be a memorable evening and we look forward to seeing you there. Doors open at 7.00pm for a 7.30pm start. \nWe are delighted to be joined by organist\, Luke Bond. Luke is Assistant Director of Music at St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle\, a position he previously held at Truro Cathedral. DESCRIPTION:Petros Singers is one of London’s leading amateur chamber choirs\, with around 35 auditioned singers. We perform a wide variety of music to a high standard\, placing emphasis on vibrant and communicative singing. We collaborate with top-class soloists and instrumentalists\, and give three or four concerts each year\, mainly in West London but also in major venues in Central London and further afield. \nWe rehearse every Tuesday evening during term time from 8:00 to 9:45 pm in St Peter’s Church.
