SUMMARY:Petros Singers Recital
DESCRIPTION:Petros Singers’ Spem in Alium singing workshop culminates in this hour-long recital. Over the course of the day\, experienced amateur singers will have worked in eight individual choirs\, each led by a professional singer\, to explore and learn Thomas Tallis’ seminal work. In addition to the Workshop Choir\, you will hear performances by the professional workshop leaders (singing together as The Garter Consort) and by Petros Singers. \nThe recital will place Tallis’ 40-part motet within the context of his other choral works\, as well as works by his pupil\, William Byrd\, who died 400 years ago in 1623. There are few composers who mastered their craft as definitively as did Tallis\, particularly notable when you consider the historic religious upheaval that dominated\, and determined\, his artistic life. While Spem in Alium represents the apotheosis of his approach\, his smaller motets are no less miraculous. Moreover\, by first teaching and then going into business with Byrd\, Tallis was able to shape the second generation of Anglican choral music\, as he had defined the first\, as well as leaving his stamp on the early English Madrigal. \nThis influence will be explored in our recital as we place the music of these two great English composers alongside each other. In addition\, Petros Singers will perform our 40th-anniversary commission by Kerensa Briggs – St Peter –continuing the Anglican choral tradition pioneered by Tallis and Byrd into the 21st Century. \nProgramme\nSpem in Alium – Thomas Tallis\nSung by the Workshop Choir \nLoquebantur variis linguis – Thomas Tallis\nJustorum Animae – William Byrd\nSt Peter – Kerensa Briggs\nMiserere Nostri – Thomas Tallis\nSung by Petros Singers \nWhen shall my sorrowful sighing slake – Thomas Tallis\nYe Sacred Muses – William Byrd\nAve Verum Corpus – William Byrd\nDomine quis habitabit – William Byrd\nSung by The Garter Consort \nSing and Glorify (Spem in Alium contrafactum) – Thomas Tallis\nSung by the Workshop Choir \nThe Garter Consort\nThe Garter Consort is the vocal arm of Richard Bannan’s professional orchestra\, The Garter Ensemble\, and includes many of the finest consort singers working in the UK. The group takes its name from The Most Honourable and Noble Order of the Garter\, the mother church of which is St George’s Chapel\, where Richard (Petros Singers’ Musical Director) sings daily services as part of the choir. \nSopranos\nMiriam Allan (Les Arts Florissants\, Collegium Vocale Gent)\nLaura Oldfield (Tenebrae\, The Cardinall’s Musick)\nAltos\nLucy Goddard (Exaudi\, Orlando Chamber Choir)\nLissie Paul (The Tallis Scholars\, The Queen’s Six)\nTenors\nTom Robson (The Sixteen\, Chichester Chorale)\nToby Ward (Ensemble Pro Victoria\, Petros Singers’ singing teacher)\nBasses\nNick Ashby (King’s Singers\, Petros Singers’ Patron)\nWill Dawes (Stile Antico\, Somerville College Oxford) \nRecital tickets £10 available from PETROS SINGERS.

SUMMARY:Opera Integra: Lucia di Lammermoor
DESCRIPTION:On Friday 25th November 2022 (7.30 pm)\, we welcome Opera Integra back (following their recent offerings of Cavalleria Rusticana and The Merry Wives of Windsor) with a full-length opera in concert that was postponed in July due to covid – Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor. \nBased on a Sir Walter Scott novel\, it is a perfect example of the italian bel-canto opera style. Most famously\, it includes a ‘mad scene’\, where Lucia sings an ethereal aria in her blood-stained wedding dress having stabbed her unwanted husband to death. An opportunity to hear this opera under the baton of Peter Crockford\, a specialist in the bel-canto style. \nTickets are £15 and are on sale by card through the website – https://operaintegra.org.uk/whats-on/ (PayPal – no account required) and will be available on the door (by cash or card).

SUMMARY:Petros Singers: Singing Workshop
DESCRIPTION:Join Petros Singers for an afternoon exploring Bach’s B Minor Mass\, the composer’s great final achievement and\, arguably\, the pinnacle of grand choral composition. This monumental work was likely never performed during Bach’s lifetime\, with the first complete public performance taking place more than 100 years after his death. We are holding this workshop in anticipation of our own performance of the B Minor Mass at St James’s Piccadilly on 1 April 2023. \nThis come-and-sing workshop will be led by David Bates\, one of Europe’s most exciting directors of Baroque music. David will work through movements of the Mass\, bringing his unique flair for vocal communication\, text and musical style. After a break for tea\, we will have the opportunity to sing through the pieces we have rehearsed and\, at 5.30pm\, there will be an informal performance which friends and family of workshop participants are warmly invited to attend. \nTickets £25 | £20 concessions and under 28s\nAvailable from the PETROS SINGERS website. \n  \nDavid Bates is artistic director of La Nuova Musica with whom he performs regularly at the Wigmore Hall\, the London Handel Festival and on a string of critically acclaimed recordings. La Nuova Musica made their debut at the BBC Proms in July 2022 with Purcell’s Dido and Aeneas (listen here)\, following David’s own debut last season directing the Britten Sinfonia. Abroad\, he has conducted operas at Komische Oper Berlin\, Staatsoper Hannover\, Innsbrucker Festwochen\, Cincinnati Opera and the Spoleto Festival\, while in the UK his credits include Glyndebourne Festival Opera and Iford Arts.

SUMMARY:Opera Integra: The Tales of Hoffman
DESCRIPTION:At a performance of Don Giovanni\, the patrons flock to the nearby bar to praise its star opera singer\, La Stella\, and are excited to see another celebrity in their midst – the infamous poet and storyteller Hoffmann. They encourage him to tell the tales of his three lost loves – automaton Olympia\, delicate soprano Antonia and dishonest courtesan Giuletta. \nOffenbach’s episodic opera of doomed love is presented in concert following Opera Integra’s fully-staged production directed by Lysanne van Overbeek (Grimeborn\, Barefoot Opera) under the baton of Jack Wong (Verbier Festival\, Hornton Chamber Orchestra). \nConscious of their mission to create opportunities for opera singers to perform complete roles\, Opera Integra presents this concert to allow the covers (those fully prepared to sing in the full production if the original performer is indisposed) to showcase their hard (and indispensable) work and commitment. \nBox Office: 07467 024389 or WWW.OPERAINTEGRA.ORG.UK \n

SUMMARY:Stephan and Nancy Storace: recital of songs
DESCRIPTION:An evening recital of songs by STEPHEN and NANCY STORACE\, friends and collaborators of W.A.Mozart. Performed by Carolee Fairbanks and Lucy Morrell\, accompanied by short talks. \nStephen and Nancy Storace were a fascinating brother-sister musical duo in 18th century opera circles\, who were also good friends and colleagues of W. A. Mozart. This concert will be a performance of rarely-heard works written especially for Nancy – including a recently re-discovered and rarely performed collaborative composition by Antonio Salieri\, W. A. Mozart\, and Stephen Storace. Throughout the concert\, the musical selections will be enhanced by historical insights regarding the relationships of these musicians\, including the Storaces’ immense capacity for friendship\, Mozart’s obvious admiration for Nancy\, and the fierce loyalty which existed between this brother-sister team throughout their lives. \nProgramme highlights will include:- \nSalieri\, Mozart and Storace:  Per la ricuperata salute di Ofelia \nStephen Storace:  Two canzonets Unless with my Amanda Blest and The Curfew \nStephen Storace:  Care donne che bramate/How Mistaken is the Lover\, an aria written (and subsequently re-written) for Nancy Storace \n  \nCarolee Fairbanks holds a BA in Physics Teaching from Brigham Young University. As a vocalist\, she studies with Ashley Stafford of London\, and currently sings as a choral scholar with the Episcopal Church of St. John the Divine in Urbana\, Illinois\, USA\, as well as singing regularly at St. Alphonsus Catholic Church in Chicago. Over the past few years\, Carolee has enjoyed delving into the archives of the British Library to discover and perform less-sung works of the 18th century English Theatre Music tradition\, and in the process has become fascinated with the lives of Stephen and Nancy Storace and W.A. Mozart. \nLucy Morrell is the current Organ Scholar at the Collegiate Church of St Mary’s\, Warwick where she plays for services as well as being involved with the training of the probationers and choristers. Prior to moving to Warwick\, Lucy was the Organ Scholar at St George’s Chapel\, Windsor Castle where she regularly accompanied and conducted the choir at Evensong as well as being involved with the training of the choristers. During her time at Windsor Lucy has been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to play pre-service music for two Royal Weddings as well as other high-profile services including the Garter Day service. Lucy read music at Girton College\, Cambridge where she was the organ scholar for three years. \n  \nTickets £10 / £5 conc
