SUMMARY:The Heart of Christianity: Lent reading group
DESCRIPTION:What does Christian faith mean today\, in the light of religious pluralism\, science\, historical scholarship\, and contemporary views on sexuality and gender? How do we makes sense of it all? \nExplore these questions this Lent as we read and discuss The Heart of Christianity: Rediscovering a life of faith\, by American Episcopalian Marcus Borg. Marcus Borg was one of the world’s leading New Testament theologians\, and also a gifted popular communicator\, and wrote numerous readable books on Christianity for the non-specialist. In The Heart of Christianity he explains why many people today struggle with traditional Christianity\, and outlines in its place what he calls an ‘emerging paradigm’ for contemporary faith\, showing how this can help us understand God\, Jesus\, the Bible and Christianity in a new way that makes sense in the modern world. \nFor those who struggle to believe all they were taught as children\, Borg explains in a convincing way why you don’t have to\, and what you should believe instead\, in a book that author Karen Armstrong called ‘marvellous\, challenging and illuminating’. \nWe’ll meet for an hour each week\, for five weeks during Lent\, looking at a couple of chapters each week. For those who can do evenings\, we meet at the vicarage\, at 8pm on Tuesday evenings\, starting on 20th February; those who are free in the day can come instead on Thursday lunchtimes at 12pm at the Cross Keys pub\, starting on 22nd February. \nDo let Charles know if you’re coming\, or if you have any difficulty getting hold of the book: it’s available in several editions\, and copies are easily available from the internet\, but make sure you don’t confuse it with his follow-up book with Tim Scorer called Living the heart of Christianity !
