SUMMARY:Lent book: Morality\, by Rabbi Sacks
DESCRIPTION:Lord Jonathan Sacks served as Chief Rabbi of the United Hebrew Congregations of the Commonwealth from 1991 until 2013\, and was a frequent contributor to radio\, television and the press in Britain and around the world. As a philosopher and writer\, Rabbi Sacks authored over 30 books\, and was awarded the prestigious Templeton Prize in 2016 in recognition of his work in affirming life’s spiritual dimension. \nMorality: Restoring the Common Good in Divided Times was Lord Sacks’ final book\, published just before his death in 2020. Jonathan Sacks argues that we are living through a period of cultural climate change\, and have outsourced morality to the markets on the one hand\, and the state on the other. The markets have brought wealth to many\, and the state has done much to contain the worst excesses of inequality\, but neither is capable of bearing the moral weight of showing us how to live. In Morality: Restoring the Common Good in Divided Times\, Lord Sacks delivers a devastating and insightful critique of our modern condition\, assessing its roots and causes from the ancient Greeks through the Reformation and Enlightenment to the present day\, and arguing that there is no liberty without morality\, and no freedom without responsibility. \nWe’ll be reading through and discussing this book across five weeks\, meeting at the Cross Keys Pub on Fridays at 12 noon for an hour or so\, from Friday 11th March till Friday 8th April. \n  \nWeek 1:  Part One – The Solitary Self (chapters 1 to 4) \nWeek 2:  Part Two – Consequences: The Market and the State (chapters 5 to 10) \nWeek 3:  Part Three – Can We Still Reason Together (chapters 11 to 16) \nWeek 4:  Part Four – Being Human (chapters 17 to 21) \nWeek 5:  Part Five – The Way Forward (chapters 22\, 23 & Epilogue) \n  \n“Britain’s most authentically prophetic voice.”    Daily Telegraph \n“One of the UK’s foremost public intellectuals…  Sacks has things to say that speak more directly to our present condition than anything in recent liberal thinking.”   New Statesman \n“The former Chief Rabbi is one of the most interesting thinkers\, writers and speakers about today. His interventions into the public debate rarely fail to encourage thought\, knowledge and indeed wisdom.”    The Spectator \n“Lord Sacks’ last book\, Morality\, while written before the spread of coronavirus\, is highly relevant to today’s situation. He would not have been silent were he still with us\, and his voice is sadly missed.”   The Times
